As a homeschool parent, I love providing fun, hands-on learning experiences that help reinforce our studies. Field trips are a great way to bring our learning to life, and Charlotte has no shortage of educational sites to explore with your kids. Whether you’re planning a family outing or a group event, you can’t go wrong with these field trip opportunities around the city.
Many places offer self-guided experiences, affordable group tours, discounts, and homeschool days. Be sure to check the hours and policies before you go.
Animal Sightings
Carolina Raptor Center - Huntersville, NC
The Raptor Center offers an exciting opportunity for kids to get up close to birds of prey. Visitors can enjoy a variety of educational experiences, including interactive exhibits, Keeper Chats, Fly-By demonstrations, nature trails, homeschool days, and more. The Raptor rehabilitation center and zoo provide free parking. As part of the Latta Nature Preserve, it’s an ideal destination for both learning and outdoor adventure.
Good Karma Ranch Alpacas - York, SC
Spend the afternoon with a hands-on farm experience where kids can engage with alpacas. Visitors can schedule family and group tours to learn about alpaca care, wool production, and the positive impact of sustainable farming. Free parking is available on-site, and admission must be paid in advance.
North Carolina Zoo - Asheboro, NC
Get ready for the perfect day trip experience at one of the largest natural habitat zoos in the world! The NC Zoo children the opportunity to learn about wildlife while exploring engaging exhibits, educational programs, fun outdoor attractions and nearby hiking trails. Homeschools registered in the state of North Carolina can reserve two free visits per school year by calling (336)879-7700. Free homeschool vouchers cannot be redeemed for a group. Visitors can enjoy free parking and free shuttle services to make the most of your visit!
Riverbanks Zoo - Columbia, SC
Riverbanks Zoo offers a beautiful landscape and outdoor destination for homeschooling families. With over 2,000 animals, lush botanical gardens, and interactive exhibits, there’s so much to see and learn! Students can discover the importance of wildlife conservation through animal encounters and educational programs. Homeschool families can also learn more about the zoo’s historical landmarks or register for one of the Homeschool Programs for an added educational experience. Purchase tickets online for discounted admission and free parking.
Tiger World - Rockwell, NC
This a one-of-a-kind zoo is dedicated to the conservation of big cats and other endangered species. Visitors can learn about lions, tigers, and other exotic animals and enjoy the playground for some added fun. Homeschool groups are eligible for discounted admission with valid ID, and parking is free. It’s the perfect way to spend the day and bring your learning to life!
Behind the Scenes Tours
Amazon Fulfillment Tours - Charlotte, NC
Charlotte residents have a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of one of Amazon’s largest fulfillment centers with a FREE, educational tour! Experience firsthand how products are stored, picked, packed, and shipped, gaining valuable insights into logistics, technology, and supply chain management. This tour is designed for children ages 6 and up, as it involves a lot of walking and areas with heavy machinery. Advance registration is required, and parking is free.
PBS Charlotte Studio - Charlotte, NC
LIGHTS. CAMERA. ACTION! Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of your favorite TV station? PBS Charlotte offers students the unique opportunity to sit in on a live studio taping and discover what it takes to bring educational content into your home! This exciting experience can be scheduled for most Thursdays at 10 am and is designed for participants ages 8 and up. Admission is free, and parking is available on-site. James K. Polk Site - Pineville, NC
Step back in time with an immersive journey through history to discover the life and legacy of the 11th US President, James K. Polk! Explore exhibits, historic buildings, and engaging activities on a self-guided tour, or enhance your experience with a guided tour. Admission and parking are free, and group tours are available by appointment for a fee.
Kings Mountain History & Trails
Did you know Reed Gold Mine in North Carolina was the site of the first documented gold discovery in the U.S.? Homeschool families can experience this exciting piece of history when they explore the grounds, try their hand at panning for gold, and even venture underground, inside the historic mine. Through interactive exhibits, kids can learn more about North Carolina's gold mining history. Who knows—you might even find a small gold token to take home! General admission and parking are free. Gold panning and underground guided tours are available for a fee.
Gardens and Nature Preserves
Wing Haven Gardens in Charlotte offers a peaceful, family-friendly destination, where kids can connect with nature, observe local birds, and learn the history of the historic house and garden. The site features outdoor activities in the children’s garden, as well as homeschool programs and group tours. Children 10 and under enjoy free admission and free parking is available onsite.
