As a homeschool parent, I love providing fun, hands-on learning experiences that help reinforce our studies. Field trips are a great way to bring our learning to life, and Charlotte has no shortage of educational sites to explore with your kids. Whether you’re planning a family outing or a group event, you can’t go wrong with these field trip opportunities around the city.
Many places offer self-guided experiences, affordable group tours, discounts, and homeschool days. Be sure to check the hours and policies before you go.
Wing Haven Gardens in Charlotte offers a peaceful, family-friendly destination, where kids can connect with nature, observe local birds, and learn the story behind the historic house and garden. The site features outdoor activities in the children’s garden, homeschool programs and group tours. Children 10 and under enjoy free admission and free parking is available onsite.

UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens
Discover the beauty of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens with a friend or plan a group self-guided tour at your own pace. Homeschool groups can add to their learning experience with a staff-guided children's tour for a fun, educational experience. Self-guided and staff-guided group tours are offered at a flat, affordable rate with advance registration. General admission is free, and while parking is free, spaces are limited. Additional paid parking is available on campus.

Nature lovers will love exploring this 1,100-acre nature preserve with kid-friendly trails, wildlife, and engaging outdoor activities. Stop by the Schroering Forest Playground, or the Crandall Bowles Children's Farm to make the most of your visit. Non-members can access the farm for $15 per car, while members pay just $5. Daily general admission is $7 for children and $14 for adults, which includes parking. For an additional fee, homeschool groups can choose from a large variety of field trip opportunities for groups of up to 28 students.

Charlotte is home to a variety of beautiful nature centers and preserves that provide educational and family-friendly programs for all ages. Spend the day hiking, observing wildlife, or participating in educational events. Many of these centers feature playgrounds, dedicated children’s play areas, and special homeschool activities. Best of all, admission and parking are free!

Wise Acres Organic Farm provides a unique experience for visitors of all ages. Families can enjoy seasonal U-Pick flowers and fruits throughout the year. Children can have fun exploring the zip lines, corn pit, and play area. Make sure to visit the farm animals and check the schedule for upcoming homeschool days. Please note that farm visits are by reservation only, ensuring a fun, crowd-free experience every time.
